I should have looked more deeply before following a recommendation to buy this.  I just remodeled two bathrooms using this diverter spout with a handheld shower combo.  Like most other comments, the diverter does not work in either and water comes from both the faucet and the shower head.  I don't know at this point what to do as I am locked into this color finish with Kohler and there diverter spouts all have bad reviews, although this one is undoubtedly the worst!

Take head of other low star reviews.  They are true. Installed per instructions, including making sure the pipe is 5" from the wall but there is a more than acceptable gap between product and wall. This is the second one I bought thinking there was a problem with the first one the plumber installed.  I installed the second myself so I wouldn't incur another plumber charge but still had the same outcome - 1 product does not fit flush to the wall.  2) if you try to adjust the position of the internal o-rings, etc, in order for the product to fit flush to the wall, water leaks out of the "u-shaped" design under the spout.

We purchased this item as part of a tub/shower package. The manufacturer connects this piece via a screw. I have had to send my plumber out 3 times to reconnect it. In addition, I had another plumber go and check the work of the initial plumber who did the install. The initial plumber did not stub out the supply too long or forget to fasten the hot and cold lines to the studs or forget to silicone the unit to the wall. This unit type should have been with a MIP (male iron pipe thread) otherwise it is underbuilt. Do not purchase this unit unless it has a MIP capacity.
