I'm a home flipper and have never installed one of these before. With a little pre planning while designing the shower everything went in smooth and is running fantastic.
I've read the other reviews and I want to help people in the future with installation. 
Yes, you need the diverter valve for the deluge button. 
READ THIS -------- plan to install a new shower control that allows 10 or more gallons per minute. They make valve bodies that do this and are not expensive at all.
With this addition you will get the water feel you are looking for. 
The house I've installed this in has a main 1" pex line in to feed cold water with 1/2" pex drops to sinks faucet and shower. The hot water is 3/4" across house the feeders are 1/2" to all faucets and shower. 
Not done with paint yet but here's some photos of the install and operating. Just be sensible before buying a high volume shower head. If your home doesn't have water pressure it's not going to make it better.

I had this shower head system installed as an addition to a newly built home. There were some construction issues where my plumbers forgot to incorporate the deluge button, but they were able to find a way to work it into my space without having to knock out any tile (the plumbers called Kohler to get helpful installation advice I'm told). If you are considering buying this without the deluge button, then you are doing yourself a huge disservice; I get a huge kick out of using it to rise off! It's pretty much a necessity.

That being said, I will echo what the other reviewer's have stated in that the normal running state of the showerhead lets out water a little conservatively. It definitely feels like it's raining on you, but you are not getting blasted from all angles. So, if you are someone looking for that kind of experience then you might have to consider some additional body faucets to feel whole (and maybe a wallet that can afford that much water useage). My legs can feel a little cold until the whole shower area begins to warm up. I too saw that a number of my showerhead's water holes were not producing water, but after giving them some gentle coersion they seem to be improved. I would guess owners should just make sure to do this initially.

At the end of the day, I think Real Rain is pretty awesome with some small hang ups. When a product has a such a premium cost, then you expect a performance many times greater than a "cheap" alternative and with minimal/no downsides. It feels good to use and I feel fancy using it, but do wish it was blasting me a bit more. I would totally recommend this showerhead, but know what you're getting!

Know What to Expect, But Still Pretty Awesome

I had the same exact experiment as Average Joe above.  Unfortunately, I had purchased the Real Rain shower prior to the pandemic and work on installing the shower was on hold. Therefore, I had not read Joe’s review prior to my purchase. You are much better off buying one of the other cheaper railheads Katalyst rain heads, which work as advertised. The water falls as an abysmal trickle, and only in deluge mode is there any real flow from the shower. I brushed the nozzles clean, still absolutely no improvement. An utter waste of money.

An absolute waste

This rain head looks amazing. Unfortunately, it doesn’t work well. Unless you’re using the deluge function it doesn’t release enough water to wash soap from your hair or body. the deluge is great. It’s advertised as working for 8 seconds. I can get around 6 seconds and then it has to refill. I’ve noticed that approximately 30% of the nozzles never have any water coming from them. The nonfunctional nozzles are evenly spaced around the entire rain head.  I called Kohler and we walked through every troubleshooting step.  Nothing worked so they sent a replacement filter pack. Didn’t help. I had my plumber come and completely disassemble the unit and check all sections for flow restrictions. Didn’t help. I called Kohler and they said that I should never expect water to come from some of the nozzles. Kohler told me that although they advertise 750, some won’t ever have water flowing from them. I completely reframed the ceiling in my bathroom to accommodate this rain head. What an utter and extreme waste of money. Save yourself several thousand dollars in fixture, plumbing and framing costs and pick something else. Now I’m stuck with something that doesn’t work well (it’s pretty, but impractical for actual daily use) and I can’t remove it because it would leave a gaping hole in my shower ceiling. Caveat emptor.
